Eligibility for the Hall

The original incarnation of the NC Swimming Hall of Fame in the 1980’s focused solely on the sport of Swimming. However, with the revival of the Hall (NC Swimming Hall of Fame 2.0) in 2015 and beyond, the current HOF Committee has expanded the criteria for honorees to also include the sports of Diving, Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo, and Open Water Swimming. There must still be a strong connection to North Carolina and both competitors and special contributors are eligible.


​Parameters/Eligibility for NCSHOF:​​

​​The North Carolina Swimming Hall of Fame (NCSHOF) recognizes outstanding achievements in, and contributions to, the sports of Swimming, Diving, Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo, Masters Swimming, and Open Water Swimming in North Carolina. Inductees have included athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, and special contributors. The NCSHOF Committee makes its selections for inductions based on nominations received from the public as well as the Committee's own knowledge of, and research on, potential inductees. The Committee seeks individuals and groups to honor as inductees, who have achieved at a high level and/or made a significant positive difference in aquatic sports in North Carolina. The NC Swimming Hall of Fame Committee typically prioritizes nominees for induction based on a hierarchy of achievements as follows:

Athletes: Olympic Gold Medalist, Olympic Record Holder, Olympic Medalist, Olympic Team Member, World Champion, World Championships Medalist, World Top 5, World Record Holder, Pan American Games Gold Medalist, Pan American Games Record Holder, Pan American Games Medalist, Pan American Team, World University Games Gold Medalist, World University Games Record Holder, World University Games Medalist, World University Games Team Member, US Swimming Senior National Champion, US Swimming Senior National Record Holder, US Swimming Senior National Top 5, NCAA Champion, NCAA Top 5, NCAA Record Holder, Conference Champion, Conference Top 5, Conference Record Holder, Team Record Holder, Team Award Winner, Special Recognition Award Winner from any major aquatics governing body
Coaches: Coach of Swimmer(s) who have achieved any of the above-listed milestones
Contributors: Outstanding contributions (and typically in a variety of capacities and over an extended period of time) to aquatic sports in North Carolina. This category includes officials, administrators, volunteers, and other special contributors.)

​In general: For Coaches and Contributors, the Committee leans towards nominees who have had at least 20 years in the sport or are retired. For Athletes, with the exception of Masters Swimming, the Committee currently leans towards those who are at the end or nearing the end of their competitive careers. All inductees into the Hall must exhibit the highest level of ethics, moral conduct and integrity.
